CHINCHILLA Opens Her Debut Album Era With “Dog Eat Dog”

CHINCHILLA arrived at a Los Angeles writing session with nothing to say. “I walked into the studio feeling so low,” she recalls. “I’d been having these meltdowns before writing sessions that had been building up and getting worse every day. I couldn’t really think of anything to write about and felt like I didn’t know what to say anymore.” Producer Mike Wise, whose credits include work with Chappell Roan and Charli xcx, introduced an unexpected element for a pop record: an old-school, rock-and-roll country banjo motif. “It was like an explosion of ideas. We wrote it so quickly and it completely unlocked my writer’s block.”

The result is Dog Eat Dog, out now via her own imprint, Chinchilla Music, and co-written with Sara Boe. This release offers an early introduction to the London artist and producer’s forthcoming debut album campaign. The song is about being dissatisfied inside a life that is objectively going well. “I swear I don’t wanna be sad,” she repeats over production that sounds like the opposite of sadness. She describes the condition as feeling uncomfortable in a healthy stability. “I love how the song is so upbeat but underneath it all pretty depressing,” she says. “It’s kind of a metaphor for life, like oh well, we carry on.”

The success

That tension has been her working material from the start. Little Girl Gone made CHINCHILLA the first British female soloist to top Billboard’s Emerging Artists chart in 2023, earned an RIAA Gold certification, passed 200 million streams, and later soundtracked the closing credits of Hostage, a popular Netflix series in the UK. Her catalogue has since moved past 400 million global streams. She has written original music for Amazon and Sky, recorded a Simlish version of Caps Lock with The Sims, opened European stadium dates for Justin Timberlake, toured North America with G Flip and played Reading, Lollapalooza, Pinkpop and Mad Cool. All of it independently.

Last year’s trilogy OK As I Am, assembled from Avoidance, OK As I Am and To Have & Hold, tracked the collapse and slow repair of a relationship across three songs, largely written in the fur-lined shed studio where she does most of her processing. Dog Eat Dog marks the exit from that chapter and the entry into something she is framing as a new era.

Tour dates

The live plans reflect that same sense of ambition. The international tour, which follows the rapid sell-out of her Avoidance run, opens in Los Angeles on October 19 and moves through four North American cities before crossing to Europe in November for fourteen shows in nine countries.

Italian fans will notice the omission: there is no date on the peninsula this time. The nearest options are Vienna on November 26 and Munich on November 24, both a short hop from the north, with Prague following on November 27. Her Italian fans may be hoping for an opportunity to see her perform there soon.
